Welcome to our web site and the current publication of Heart Hand and Eye, Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking's newsletter celebrating the work of our students, alumni and faculty.

New Web Site Launch

We are anxiously awaiting the launch of our new web site, at which time we will bring you up to date with our Craftsman and Resident Craftsman programs.

Program Changes

Before Jim passed, he left with us with his final thoughts on the craft and on craft education. Last summer we made significant changes to our Craftsman, Resident Craftsman and Artisan programs in homage to my teacher. These changes include new exercises with more time built in for reflection. These changes have been very well received and have contributed greatly to the supportive and creative environment which exists at the school.

Alumni Don Stenner, our first of three guest faculty is currently at the school assisting Robert with this years class, many of whom have begun work on their second pieces. Don is a fine craftsman with a gentle soul and a fine eye. Each of our Guest Faculty have been carefully selected and brought into the program where their presence most benefits our students.

New Artisan Program

Mortise & Tenon

July 11-15, 2011
Cost $775
Artisan Program Students $600

Since our small schools inception our goal has been to provide quality craft education, founded and dedicated to the teachings of James Krenov in a creative and supportive environment. We have not introduced any new programs until we felt we had our existing programs dialed in. In our ongoing effort to refine each of our programs here at Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking we have decided that another week needs to be dedicated to further explore mortise and tenon joinery.

While this program will not be officially part of the six week Artisan Program in 2011, it will lead to the replacement of the six week, with a seven week Artisan Program beginning in the summer of 2012. The one-week program will be offered a cost of $775. Students who will be attending the 2011 six week Artisan Program, will be offered the seventh week at $600, bringing the cost of a seven week Artisan Program to $4500. The program also gives Artisan Program alumni who are unable to return to commit to the Resident Artisan or Craftsman Program an opportunity to return to Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking to continue with their craft education.

While we have touched on mortise and tenon in our in Joinery & Balance program, priority has always been given to doweling, and frame and panel used in the making of our drawer pocket cabinet exercise. While dowel and frame and panel are used in our cabinets, our stands, tables and chairs require the use of mortise and tenon. Rather than sacrificing the integrity of our existing Artisan Program, we have decided to offer a one-week program beginning the summer of 2011 that will be devoted entirely to mortise and tenon.

Description
The program will begin with mortising. Students will be guide through a sensible and sensitive method and approach. Students will then hand cut and fit a stub tenon to a mortise. We will then move onto the sawhorse exercise where each student will complete the millwork, joinery surface preparation and assembly of a half scale pair of ‘Krenovian’ sawhorses. The sawhorses will feature through and wedged mortise and tenon with pillowed tenons. Students will also be introduced to floating tenon joinery and multiple compound angled mortise and tenon.
