Hardware & Finish
“Many craftsman are inventive with metal as well as
wood. It is feasible to make very neat, strong hinges to suit the exact
purpose of the piece one wants to build.”
James Krenov 1979
In this program, students will be offered a look at two
equally important aspects of our craft. Making and installing of shop made
specific hardware as well as surface preparation and finishing. The entire
week will emphasis simple methods using simple tools and readily available
materials.
Studentys will make a carving knife to be used to shape their wooden hardware using readly available tools and materials.
We begin the week by demonstrating the making and
installation of knife hinges including both straights and “L” hinges
after which time each student will fabricate a set of knife hinges using
brass bar stock and drill rod. We then explore the possibilities of making and installing
‘Krenovian’ latches, pulls and consoles. Each student will carve and
fit at least one of each of these essential wooden hardware. Students will
be given various types of wood to further explore the different
characteristics of various woods. We finish out the week we look at surface preparation of
both friendly and non-friendly woods. Hand planes, scraper planes, cabinet
scrapers, card scrapers and abrasives will all be discussed. Simple
finishing products of use in a small shop will be covered including:
polish(or shellac), oil mixtures and waxes. Each student will be given
sample boards to practice methods covered. |
